I would venture to say that EVERY parent wants to raise empathetic and giving children. The problem is that children are not BORN empathetic and giving. They are actually born kind of self-centered (or is it just mine, lol). I actually have to do a little thing called “parenting” to instill these values in my little ones. I am going to show you why teaching your kids to give is easy during the holidays.
Why Teaching Your Kids to Give is Easy During the Holidays
The holidays are a time of year when kids want to GET, GET, GET. They understand the concept of GETTING even at a young age. Just ask one of my toddlers and they can tell you what they want for Christmas. Kids love to get presents, hugs, love and happy meal toys, lol. I can show my children examples during the holidays of how other children also want to get a gift, but maybe they don’t have a family. We could buy a gift for that child and I think my child will comprehend the concept of giving.
There are TONS of opportunities to give back during the holidays. My family can participate in Toys for Tots, Angel Tree, UNICEF and the list goes on and on. We can go to our local city building and find people in our own town that need help for Christmas. If we don’t want to donate toys we can help keep people warm by donating blankets, coats and hats. This time of year offers more opportunities then any other time to show children how to give to others.
Kindness and goodwill abound during the holidays. No matter what faith a person has….most people are in a charitable mood during the holidays. Something about the lights, the colors, the season just brings out the best in people. If I am in a giving mood then that is the best time for me to teach my children about giving. I can lead by example!
The holidays offer great sales and deals. I know that finding extra money to GIVE to others can sometimes be challenging. I am able to find really nice gifts, coats and food on sale during November and December and this helps our family to give even more.
There is no bad time of year to teach children to give. I just wanted to show why teaching your kids to give is easy during the holidays. Why not take the easy route when you can, right?
