School’s coming up quick and it’s time to start buying back-to-school supplies, you know, just in case you didn’t know. Heh. One of the most important items, in my humble, non-expert, just a mom opinion, is the backpack–and not many people realize that. The backpack is what your kid will use all school year to carry their textbooks and other supplies, lunches, toys, electronics, snacks, gum, everything. Basically, it’s like their little snail-shell home. And that’s uber-important. So, here’s what to look for in a backpack, to ensure it’s the best.

Durability
The first thing you are going to want to consider when looking at backpacks is the durability of it. Like I said above this is what they will be using to carry all of their textbooks back and forth from school to home and they can be quite heavy, especially if they are carrying more than one at a time. Along with all their other supplies such as pencils, notebooks, binders, etc.
These things will cause a lot of wear and tear on your kid’s backpack throughout the school year. So make sure you look for a backpack that is tough, this way you won’t need to buy another one, half way through the year. Because this has actually happened to me…
Expense
Depending on your kid’s age they tend to like things that are “trendy” and “in-style” but most of those are very expensive and, truth be told, not made of very strong stuff. You’ll have to come to a common ground with your kid and try to find one they like, but that’s also not going to make you cry as you open your wallet.
This may take time, but you’ll just have to search and search in the right places, keep your eye out for sales, low prices, etc. Just know that it may take some determination to find the best backpack for your kid.
OR, you can just go online to a trusted resource to find the best–erhem, read High Sierra here–that’s my opinion. Just check out the awesomeness–that’s actually kind of the easiest route. Heh.
Support
Make sure that the backpack fits your kid comfortable and that the backpack gives them good back support. This is very important because all the things they will carry around can cause strain on their backs which can be very bad for them in the future.
Take some heavy books from home, or something while you are out shopping for the backpack and test each one you find. Ask your kid how they feel, if it hurts or if it’s comfy.
And remember to ask about the straps–if they dig into your kiddo’s shoulders, they can bruise…not fun (this is what happened to me in high school).
Long Lasting
Don’t be afraid to splurge a little on a backpack that is tough and strong enough to last long. Dads, I’m talking to you here. Don’t underspend especially if the backpack could last your kid a few school years (because that would be AWESOME).
Also, look for a backpack that is neutral instead of a themed one, for example, a superhero backpack, because kids change what they like every year (except for Star Wars, they always like Star Wars School Stuff–just FYI). So a neutral backpack will ensure they can use it again for the next year. And if the kiddo is just DEAD-SET on a theme-y one, get them some zipper pulls…just dress it up without compromising. Heh.
Whether you believe it or not the backpack is the most important item for back-to-school and these are some of the most important things on what to consider when buying a backpack for your kid. Remember school is coming soon!
So get a head start. Do you look at these things when buying your kids a backpack? Can you think of anything else a parent should consider when buying a backpack for their kid? Let me know in the comments.
