I was faced with a peculiar dilemma the other day when I decided I wasn’t going to take my kids to the nearby preschool. And though I have a 14 year old that I do not and will NEVER homeschool, well, after asking around and talking to a lot of moms…I’m wondering, should I homeschool preschool? I’m sure lots of parents ask this question…but I just don’t know the right answer yet…but I think I’m about to find out. LOL!
Should I Homeschool Preschool
First things first…I have to look at MY child
Come on…who knows my kid better then me? What is my gut telling me about putting my child into a “preschool” center versus some at home learning? I think us moms know a lot more then we admit we know! What do I really think would benefit my child the most? Learning at home or learning in a more traditional preschool setting?
What are My Options for Preschool
This question is pretty important in my humble opinion. Some families are very limited in their options for preschool. If you don’t have any preschool centers nearby…homeschooling preschool maybe your only option. I also have to remember to look at the COST factor!!
If I have traditional preschools nearby and also have the time and ability to homeschool preschool then I need to sit down and really weigh which choice is best for my family and my child.
What are the Benefits of Homeschooling Preschool?
- Less chance of my child picking up poor social behaviors from other children. I know it sounds like of bad…but let’s just be honest with each other here. Children under age 5 are VERY impressionable. When they are in a room full of other kids their age…they will mimic what they see. If they are seeing poor behavior..they may come home with poor behavior. If I am homeschooling preschool I will only have to worry about the behavior of the other kids in my home, hee, hee!
- I am truly working at the perfect pace for my child. If my child is the only preschooler in their class…the pace is going to be perfect. They won’t be held back by other student’s who learn at a slower pace or vice versa.
- My child may miss out on a lot of GERMS if they stay home for preschool. Just sayin’ because well…it is true. They will not be exposed to as many viruses that little hands love to spread around!
Lastly Look at YOU
Only YOU know YOU. Am I up for homeschooling my little blessing for preschool? I think that most parents CAN do it, but not every parent WANTS to do it! I think that is perfectly OKAY. I really believe that every parent has strengths and maybe teaching preschool to a toddler isn’t one of them. The important thing is to be honest with myself.
So….are you asking yourself the same question? Should I homeschool preschool? We’re still chewing on the idea here. Just remember…there is no guilt no matter what you decide, right…just finding out what is best for your family and your little learner.
