I’m sitting here on my deck on Halloween, watching my neighbors fishing the lake in front of our house, while my kids make their costumes in another room. Very quaint afternoon, honestly. Makes me want a big fish fry and especially some Easy Homemade French Fries. There’s just something about a crisp, hot fry that you didn’t buy at a fast food joint that makes my mouth water. It’s all about that clean-eating, right? You can totally taste the good-for-you. Oh, wait, it’s fried. Never mind. Not good for you at all…Heh.
Ingredients for Homemade French Fries
- 6-8 baker-sized potatoes
- 1 small onion
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 tspn cayenne pepper spice (if desired)
- 1 tspn salt
- 1/2 tspn pepper
- 2 cups vegetable oil
How to Make Homemade French Fries
- Place oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Peel onion and slice in half.
- Slice each half of the onion into thin sections and break-up.
- Place in a gallon-size or larger baggie.
- Wash potatoes and peel.
- Slice potatoes lengthwise in thin, long strips.
- Place in the gallon-sized baggie with the onion.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, place the cornmeal and seasonings.
- Mix thoroughly.
- Add to baggie with the potatoes and onion.
- Shake the bag until the potatoes are completely covered.
- Check the oil by dropping a pinch of cornmeal into the pan. If it sizzles, the oil is ready, if it does not, continue to let it heat for another 5 minutes before checking again.
- When the oil is ready, using a slotted spoon, place the fries into the oil. Only put enough fries in the pan to cover the bottom of the pan–too many and you’ll have mushy potatoes.
- Allow the fries to cook on one side for about 5 minutes before rotating them. Continue to rotate them every 5 minutes until they are a golden brown.
- Remove from the pan and place in a plate with a paper towel on the bottom to collect the extra oil.
- Repeat until all of the fries are cooked.
- Enjoy with a fried fish filet or two. Mmmm…
