Caring for Someone Long Distance

Thank you for sharing!

If you are caring for someone who lives quite a long way from where you are, then you will know how draining this can be to your physical and mental health.

You may also find that you end up struggling to look after them as well as yourself, but there are things that you can do to try and make things work in your favour.

Know that you’re a Carer

The first thing you need to acknowledge is that distance doesn’t make you any less of a carer. You will be spending a lot of your time worrying about your loved one, and you may also find that you spend a lot of time doing things to help them.

Just because you live far away, that doesn’t mean that you should not try and insert yourself where necessary. It’s very easy for you to feel excluded from the conversation regarding your rate of pay as a carer, or even if you are entitled to benefits.

You may also find it hard to look after someone from a medical perspective when you live so far away, but there are things you can do here, and that includes making sure that you are recognising your role, and that it is no more invalid just because you live far away.

Create a Network

Another thing you need to do is try and do what you can to create a network.

Some people may live closer than you. Still, building your support network now can help later and give you more peace of mind.

Try to stay connected with friends and family. Visit regularly if you can. That small effort can make a big difference to your mental health.

It also ensures that if an emergency happens, you’re not alone. You’ll have people ready to support both you and your loved one.

Look into Care Homes

If you are concerned about your loved one, then another thing you need to do is try and look into care homes if possible. If you look into care homes, then you can at least make sure that your loved one is getting a good quality of care even when you are not around.

You can look into assisted living for seniors if you want, or you can simply see what other options are out there. Either way, you must take the time to not only find someone who can help your loved one, but also you, as it means you are not putting yourself under too much pressure when trying to meet their living requirements.

It also means if there is an issue, you know it is being handled properly, which is again imperative when you have a caring role for someone in your life.
