My 2 friends are coming over the weekend and they’re going to bring in something for barbeques and want me to make Barbecue Sauce for it.
The last time they came, they brought in some barbeque sauces, but we did not have enough, so I made some BBQ Sauce that I had learned to make years before. And they loved it!
Barbecue Sauce or BBQ Sauce can be a mere, simple saucy liquid that we often find in bottles or jars. But it can be a big impact on certain foods.
Try eating grilled meats with and without the sauce. Which of these two options do you prefer best? BBQ Sauce indeed makes the difference.
BBQ Sauce is in fact very popular for its many uses. It can be used for basting, topping, marinade, flavoring, and condiments in mostly barbecued meats like pork, chicken, and beef.
But there is always someone out there who really loves the sauce and would use it as a dip to their chips, fried foods, crackers, veggie slices, fruits, and toppings to their salads.
There are lots of variations that you can find everywhere, depending on the places it came from and the foods you’d like to serve with it. And sometimes it depends on the occasions too. They can be sweet-spicy, sour-sweet, tangy, fruity, and a lot more flavor.
Today, I’m going to share with you a favorite version of mine, which my friends loved, as well. Basically, a classic Barbecue Sauce. Very simple to make and ingredients that are readily available in grocery stores.

Barbecue Sauce
Have these Barbecue Sauce ingredients on your list.
- Ketchup – There are many kinds of ketchup. You can use your favorite one. Or something less sour or spicier.
- Brown Sugar – It is the taste of molasses in it that makes the flavor of the sauce richer.
- Apple Cider Vinegar – it will add tang to your sauce.
- Worcestershire Sauce – it adds kicks to the flavor with a distinct taste
- Paprika – it has mild to a bit spicy flavor and adds color to the sauce
- Mustard Powder – its distinct tangy flavor helps cut the fatty taste of the meat.
- Salt and pepper – helps balance the flavor.
When making the BBQ sauce, you can increase or decrease the amount of an ingredient depending on how you like the taste. You may even do substitutions like the sugar into another sweetener. However, tastes will vary as well.
All you have to do is to mix all the ingredients together. And there you have it.
You can simmer this sauce over very low heat (or use a double boiler) to reduce the mixture, which will thicken it up and help the flavors to develop and blend.
You will find that this BBQ sauce is indeed better than the store-bought sauce. You can also use this as your guide to create another flavor or variety.
Here are some suggestions for other ingredients that may add or change the flavor (paid links):
- Smoke Flavoring
- Orange Juice
- Pineapple Juice
- Tomato Sauce
