The final weeks of school often feel different. The routine is still in place, but many families have already shifted their focus to summer. Backpacks become more disorganized, lunch planning gets pushed aside, and children start counting down the days until summer break.
At the same time, many homes are not ready for the extra activity that comes with having children home all day. Taking time to prepare now can help make the transition into summer smoother and less stressful for everyone.
There’s almost like this burnout feeling where you’re just waiting for things to just happen, right? Especially your kids!
And no, summer prep doesn’t need to be some huge Pinterest-level project. But sure, have at it if you want, you can transform the garden, get a pool, a swingset, things like that.
Most parents are not out here creating themed snack stations and perfectly labeled outdoor bins for fun (only performative TikTok moms do that). But should you still make some preparations before they’re home all day, every day? Yeah absolutely.
The Backyard Needs to be Usable
A backyard can get ignored for most of spring and still look fine enough, until everyone actually starts using it. Then it becomes very obvious that the chairs are dirty, the table is sticky, the umbrella is broken, and the outdoor toys are either missing, cracked, or full of old rainwater.
But depending on where you are, maybe it’s already hot, and maybe your family is already going outside.
So before summer really starts, it helps to just walk around and deal with the obvious stuff. Wipe down the furniture, check the shade, move anything sharp or rusty, throw away broken toys, and make sure there’s somewhere for people to sit that doesn’t look or feel gross.
If you want something all cutesy and Matha Stewart-esque, sure, go about it, but it’s more about setting up your backyard so your kids can go out there.
Pool Stuff is Better Handled Before the First Hot Day
If there’s a pool at home, kids are going to remember it exists as soon as the weather gets warm. They won’t care that it still needs cleaning, that the towels aren’t ready, or that half the floats somehow disappeared since last summer.
In their minds, warm weather means swimming, and any delay feels deeply unfair. You were a kid at one point, you know how it is, the pool is everything, it’s like the sanctuary.
So it’s worth checking the pool setup early, before it turns into a whole thing. Just look at the cover, ladder, filter, goggles, floats, towels, sunscreen, and whatever else usually becomes important once everyone is already outside.
Maybe you already have all of this stuff (most people do). But just generally speaking, taking stock of swimming pool supplies before the season really starts makes life easier, because finding out something is missing while kids are waiting to swim is the exact kind of avoidable stress nobody needs.
Also, make sure the pH is just right, as usually the cleaning supplies get competitive to buy at stores during peak season.
The Random Outdoor Mess Needs One Place to Land
By the second week of summer, the backyard can quickly become cluttered. Kids often leave towels, water bottles, and toys scattered around the yard. Sometimes, they even bring outside items that were never meant to leave the house.
To keep the space organized, place a basket or storage bin near the back door. You can keep it outside or just inside the entrance. This simple solution gives everyone a place to put their belongings and helps prevent the yard from becoming messy.
