Parchment Paper – This is essential for keeping your workspace clean and limiting the mess. It’s simple to undo any mistakes made on this paper.

Baking Sheet – Important in the crafting process, the baking sheet will help to shape your clay sloth and is instrumental in the baking stage of the craft.

Polymer Clay – Your primary crafting material. All your sloth’s adorable features will be shaped from this malleable and easy-to-use medium.

Clay Cutting and Piercing Tools – Precision is key in sculpting. These tools will help refine your sloth’s features, bringing your craft to life in astonishing detail.

Paint Brush – Crucial for applying the Modge Podge to your craft, as well as perfect for adding any fine details, colors, and finishing touches.

How to Make Clay Sloths

Now that you have all the materials, it’s time to make these adorable clay sloths!

  1. Begin by rolling a brown 6cm ball for the body. Then create four 1cm balls for the hands, again using brown clay.
  2. Roll a 1cm tan ball to make the sloth’s mask, two ½ cm brown balls for the eyes, four ¼ cm balls for the claws, and a tiny black ball for the nose.
  3. Flatten the brown ball into a rounded rectangular shape to form the body.
  4. Shape the small brown balls into hands and carefully attach them to the sides of the body.
  5. Mold the tan ball into a mask shape and place it on the front, top area of the body.
  6. Create almond-shaped eyes using the two smaller brown balls and firmly press them onto the mask. Use a stylish tool to make a circular indent in each eye – this is where the sloth’s warm gaze comes from!
  7. Place the tiny black ball centrally between the eyes to represent the nose.
  8. Shape the tiny tan balls into claws, using a cutting tool. These claws then need to be pressed onto each hand of the sloth.
  9. For an adorable touch, make a ½ cm red heart out of clay – although this is optional, it adds a sweet sentiment.
  10. Now your craft is ready to be baked. Always make sure to follow the baking instructions as directed on your polymer clay’s packaging.
  11. Once the clay has cooled, the final step is to seal your craft with Modge Podge using a paintbrush. This gives your craft a beautiful finish while also ensuring it stays intact for longer.

Tips for Making Clay Sloths

Crafting with clay is incredibly fun and therapeutic – but it can also be a bit tricky if you’re just starting out. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you master this craft:

  1. Patience is Key: Working with clay requires time. Don’t rush through the steps. Take your time when forming your shapes and attaching pieces together.
  2. Use the Right Tools: Make sure you have all the necessary tools before you start. Clay cutting and piercing tools are essential for creating detailed designs.
  3. Keep Clay Moist: To keep the clay from hardening and cracking before you’re ready, consider wrapping it in cling film or a damp cloth when not in use.
  4. Smooth Out Surface: To avoid fingerprints or uneven surfaces on your craft, use a small amount of water or rubbing alcohol to smooth out the clay.
  5. Test Clay Condition: If the clay is too hard to shape, it may need to be conditioned. You can do this by kneading it with your hands.
  6. Correctly Use Parchment Paper: Use parchment paper on the baking sheet to prevent the clay from sticking during baking.
  7. Seal Properly: After baking and allowing your craft to cool, seal it with Modge Podge. This gives it a nice finish and makes it more durable.
  8. Make it Unique: Don’t be afraid to experiment and make the craft your own! Add different features like a clay hat or glasses to personalize.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don’t be discouraged if your first few tries don’t turn out as expected.
