Raise a Girl Scientist with these 10 Easy Steps

Thank you for sharing!

(Inside: Boys and girls are the same–except for their sexual organs. Why are women treated differently? Maybe because we haven’t been intentionally building girls up to be scientists and mathematicians. Dudes. You can raise a girl scientist with these 10 easy steps–just like you would with a boy.)

Women make up 47% of the workforce according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but statistically, represent a lower ration in science fields than boys.

What.

The.

Heck?!

Are we still digging out of the stone age?

Kinda feels like it.

Seriously, girls are just as capable of being a scientist as boys, and it is the time we start teaching them that.

Raising girl scientists with intention–and this is what I am doing to raise mine.

Raise a Girl Scientist with these 10 Easy Steps

Take her on nature walks.

Science is all around us.

From their love of animals, plants, and life, you can encourage her to think about science on your nature walks.

Show her your love for nature and teach her the science behind what she sees, hears, and smells.

Let her get muddy.

Getting muddy digging for worms isn’t just for boys.

The more girls are able to get their hands messy, the more they will love science as much as the boys.

Build an outdoor mud kitchen–get muddy with her even.

Nothing is better than an example of mom or dad being muddy too.

Look at the stars.

The stars are beautiful, and there is so much to learn about them.

Find the constellations, ask questions, and get your girl interested in finding the answers in the stars.

Get a telescope and look for planets, constellations, and moons.

Curiosity inspires critical thinkers.

Do science experiments.

Science can be done in many different ways.

From making your own rock candy and cooking to erupting a volcano and figuring out how a light works.

The more science experiments you do, the more interested your girl will be.

Get a science subscription box.

Girls that Make is perfect for empowering your girls by giving them projects that they can make but will still keep their interest (it’s not always about robots and bugs, guys–sometimes a girl just wants to make a freaking kitty cat mask that lights up…seriously).

Plus, this takes the pressure off you to come up with something science-inspiring.

If you truly want to raise a girl scientist, you have to encourage her to work on projects that interest her, without it always being your idea.

Putting a box of fun things in front of her that she can build on her own can be critical to building that independent interest.

Ask what your daughter is interested in.

With science being such a board category, ask your girl-scientist what she likes about science.

If she likes animals, spend time researching and looking up facts about animals.

If she likes flowers, explore flowers.

Grab her interest with science that motivates her.

Encourage your daughter to use her five senses.

Teach your daughter to truly observe nature and the world around her.

What does she smell, feel, taste, see, or hear?

These observation skills are crucial to raising a girl scientist.

Head to the science museum.

Nothing brings science to life quite like a museum.

Science museums allow you to touch clouds, discover balance, tinker with engineering and explore the organs up close.

If you want to encourage science, what better place to bring her than to a science museum?

Always answer questions.

All kids have questions about the world around them.

Even if you don’t know an answer, look it up together.

Encourage and foster your daughter’s questions by helping her find the answers to the questions she has.

Science is full of questions and it takes a scientist to truly find the answers.

Model science in your own life.

If you truly want your daughter to be a girl scientist, show how she can be a scientist through your own life.

Do experiments for yourself, research information, and explore new concepts.

And talk through with your girl scientist what you’re doing–what you’re learning.

She has to know it’s ok to learn, because sometimes society will tell her it’s not.

Girls are just as capable of becoming scientists as boys are and it’s time we teach them how intelligent they are.

Help your daughter with her future success by taking the intentional steps to raise a girl scientist now.

It’s up to us parents to raise a girl scientist that can be proud of herself and help bring a new age of non-sexism to the sciences.

And these 10 fun ideas to raise a girl scientist are perfect starters–so pin it and remind yourself every couple of months…
