How to Save Money on Home Projects

Don’t Delay, Start Today!

Start the projects before they get worse.

Don’t let a small roof leak go until you are forced to do a full roof replacement. Don’t leave a leak from a pipe going until the wall is damaged or your water bill gets out of hand.

So often we try to put things off until we find a time or we’re in a better place financially. But–does that ever reeeeally happen?

The end result is a more costly repair that is even harder to afford. Acting fast will save you money in the long run.

Save on Building Supplies.

Take advantage of places like Habitat for Humanity Restore, and other second hand or less than perfect building supply stores.

Or hit the “discard pile” of super-discounted lumber and other supplies on the side of the “pro” center of your local home improvement store. Sometimes, they’ll pile up thousands of dollars of wood and other supplies that are slightly damaged or warped–and mark it down to just pennies on the dollar.

This is a great way to get things you need for less.

Just be sure to really inspect the items you are buying and be certain that you are fine with any flaws that may be present.

Check your local buy, sell, trade groups and apps, for basic supplies that others are getting rid of. This is often a great way to get free supplies to help save on home projects.

When buying paint check your hardware stores oops section to see if you can find buckets of a color you like at a steep discount because the color was not right for someone else. You never know when you’ll get lucky and that will be the perfect shade for your project. And that right there could save money on home projects, hands-down.

Ask for a Gift

You know how it’s getting harder and harder for you to identify what your parents/spouse/relatives want for the holidays or birthdays? Yeah, it’s getting hard for them to find gifts for you too.

So, when the next holiday comes around, rather than saying “oh, I don’t know” ask them to help you fund that latest home improvement project.

Whether it’s just getting you a gift card to the local hardware store, asking for a specific tool you’ll need or even the wood to build that special bridge over your faux creek in the backyard–ask for it. Seriously, the people in your life want to give you things–ask for things you really want.

Do It Yourself.

Do as much of the labor as you can yourself.

Often home projects can be done yourself allowing you to leave more room in your budget for the things that you can not do yourself.

Be sure to pull in a professional for things you are unsure about to reduce the risk of paying more to fix a mistake later, but if it’s something that you can look up videos on YouTube about and figure out the simple-how-to of it, then try it.
