Dear Grandma This is What You Should Really Be Buying the Kids For Christmas

Am I sounding totally rude and heartless with the title of this post?  I know…it sounds bad, but admit it..most moms have thought this very thing before!  Kids don’t want a knitted sweater anymore.  I want to help grandma out a little bit, so here goes!  Dear Grandma, this is what you should really be buying the kids for Christmas!

Dear Grandma, This is What You Should Really Be Buying the Kids for Christmas

  • Quiet gifts make a big noise with parents.  In case I am not being totally clear here…I love when my kids get QUIET toys.  What I don’t love is when a grandparent gives my toddler a drum set.  Yep. I said it.
  • Gifts that aren’t HUGE in size can be very appreciated by the parents.  Many families don’t have enough space for a big ride on pony and it causes stress when a grandparent goes out and buys a large sized gift.  I know kids love big sized items and if you are a grandma who wants to buy a giant stuffed bear. Just ask the parent first if they have the room.
  • I want my children’s grandma to get them a gift they will love, but please don’t outdo me here.  Don’t get their number one wish please.  Let me be the superstar once a year!  Pretty please!!
  • Age Appropriate Gifts are always a plus.  It is really hard to work with my 2-year-old on a massive lego project with small pieces she wants to eat.  It is okay to ask for suggestions about age-appropriate gifts, grandma.
  • I love when my children receive gifts that don’t require a bunch of effort on my part.  Do you know what I mean here….no parent involvement required gifts are the bomb.  I am exhausted on Christmas day and really don’t want to have to sit down and help my daughter dye her new Barbie’s hair purple because it is too hard to do alone.

And more great tips:

  • Grandma, don’t be afraid of technology.  There are so many fun games, programs, and toys out there that involve technology and the grandkids will love it all.  Grandma can score big points with a techie gift.
  • Experience gifts are a blessing to everyone involved.  Grandparents can give the gift of experiences like tickets to a theatrical production, concert, sporting event, science museum, etc.  These gifts are also a great way for my kids to spend some special time with their grandparents.
  • Personalized gifts can be a great idea.  I know my young children LOVE to see their name on their toys, bags, etc.  This is a way to give a special gift that they can keep forever.  Some of my favorite personalized gift ideas for children are (paid links) backpacks, puzzles, rocking chairs and books.
  • Kids love gifts that coincide with their talents and passions.  Come on grandma…find out what your grandchildren really love right now.  Do they like science?  Try giving some (paid link) science kits, a magazine subscription for a children’s science publication.  Do they love dance?  How about extra lessons, dance leotards, books about dancers.  There are unlimited ideas when you delve into the child’s interests.
  • Give them what they want.  I know it sounds crazy and it can be hard to do.  That teenage granddaughter may only want expensive eye shadow palettes for Christmas.  I know it can seem boring to buy clothes, makeup, shoes…but if those are the things the child really wants it will make them happy!  I know that the goal of every grandma out there is to make those grandkids smile!

Kids are really not that hard to please.  There are unlimited gift ideas especially if you are willing to be creative.  There won’t be anymore complaining from parents or children after Dear Grandma, This is What You Should Really be Buying the Kids for Christmas gets read!
