20-Minute Pepper Steak {buffet style}

Thank you for sharing!

When I need a fast, easy dinner, I make this fast pepper steak. It tastes just like buffet pepper steak and my kids love it.

When I was in high school I totally got my dream-job: Waitress at the local Chinese Buffet. My heart was set on learning how to cook those wonderful dishes that sat under those heat lamps just calling my name. After three years working there, I officially know how to make about 3 dishes. Apparently, waitresses do not work in the kitchen learning to cook. My poor 16 year old mind was so sad…However, I am proud to say, that despite my inability learn all those great tricks, I totally know how to make Pepper Steak. In 20-minutes. I can also stand on my head and whistle, but there’s no reason to show that to you, although I did learn to do that at the restaurant.

If you want to know what else I can make after my stint at the restaurant, you’ll have a little laugh:

  • Egg Drop Soup
  • Sesame Chicken

So, there, that’s it. I know it’s depressing, but it’s the truth…3 years, 3 recipes. What a waste of a good high-school job…I totally could have been flipping burgers.

Ingredients for Pepper Steak

  • 1 – 1 1/2 lbs steak
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/8 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 2 cloves minced garlic (approximately 1 tblspn)
  • 1 tblspn sesame oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

How to Make Pepper Steak

  1. Start by putting your rice on to cook, because there’s nothing worse than cooking this whole batch of pepper steak and having no rice to go with it.
  2. Slice veggies and meat in thin strips, small enough to be eaten without cutting at the table.
  3. Pre-heat wok or large skillet with tall sides over medium-high heat.
  4. Place sesame oil in wok.
  5. When the skillet and oil are hot, place the veggies and meat in the skillet and turn the heat down to medium.
  6. Immediately pour the soy sauce and teriyaki sauce, salt, pepper and garlic.
  7. Stir continuously until veggies begin to soften and meat is cooked thoroughly.
  8. Place a heaping scoop of rice in your bowl, then a scoop of pepper steak and enjoy!

I like to throw some chopped tomatoes on top for color, and because I’m slightly in love with tomatoes, but that’s not really how we eat it on the buffet, so you have to choose whether or not to do that on your own…
